The main issue after the Election of 1876 was the Democrats of the House of Representatives wanted to reject the decision made by the Commission.

When the President kept his promise to remove the troops from the south, it effectively ended reconstruction. African Americans, the former slaves, called the Compromise of 1877 the "Great Betrayal."
